Theme Verse: “For I will pour water on the thirsty land and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit…” – Isaiah 44:3
There are seasons when our hearts feel hollow and our prayers echo in silence. Times when faith feels dry, strength feels spent, and purpose seems distant. Yet it’s in those very seasons, the empty and the dry, that God does His most transformative work.
In this four-part devotional series, Power in the Empty and Dry, I explore how emptiness and dryness are not signs of divine absence but invitations to divine encounter. Each reflection will help you see how God moves in your stillness, fills your emptiness, and brings glory out of what feels barren.
Whether you’re in a season of waiting, wilderness, or weariness, these devotionals remind you that God is closer than you think, and your empty spaces are sacred ground.
Part 1: Power in the Empty and Dry
When emptiness feels heavy and dryness stretches long, God is not absent; He is preparing.
Discover the sacred side of empty seasons and how God begins His greatest work where there seems to be nothing.
In Africa, we understand the value of firewood; it burns best when it’s dry. Wet wood struggles to catch fire; it only smokes and frustrates the cook. Likewise, when your phone battery dies, you don’t throw it away; you recharge it. But first, it must be empty. You cannot fully recharge a phone that’s still half-full and running with too many apps open.
In the same way, our lives sometimes need to run empty or go dry before God can refill us with power and purpose.
This message is for those who feel empty or dry, whose souls are weary, whose hearts are tired, and whose prayers seem to echo in silence. If you’re full today, you might not need this message yet. But if you’re running on empty, this word is for you.
The Sacredness of Emptiness and Dryness
Every believer passes through seasons of emptiness or dryness. Though they are not the same, both can become sacred spaces of transformation.
- Emptiness is a state of lack – a void longing to be filled.
- Dryness is a state of spiritual thirst – a yearning for fresh rain from heaven.
Neither is a punishment; both are preparations. God uses them to strip away distractions and make room for His presence.
“The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” – Genesis 1:2
Even before creation, God worked best in nothingness. Emptiness is not the absence of God; it is often the beginning of His creative power.
So, if your soul feels dry or your heart feels hollow, you’re not abandoned – you’re being prepared. God is not absent in your emptiness; He is hovering over it, waiting to speak life into what seems silent and shapeless.
In His Kingdom, even your dry ground is holy ground. Where there is nothing, God begins something new.
Reflection:
What if your emptiness is not a setback but an invitation? What if your dryness is the very soil where living water will soon flow?
God does His best work in the empty and dry.
