When God Seems Silent: Trusting the Voice You Cannot Hear
Today’s Scriptural Arsenal (SA) is best enjoyed whilst listening to the song “Wait Upon the Lord” by Leeland
Have you ever sat in the stillness of your soul, longing to hear God’s voice – only to be met with what feels like divine silence? This lonely, confusing space, where questions drown out answers, is more common than you think. But here’s the truth: silence doesn’t mean absence. When heaven seems quietest, God is often doing His deepest work within us.
How then can you trust the voice you cannot hear? How can you know God is there with you when He seems he is not to be answering you? In this Scriptural Arsenal, you will learn how to trust the voice you cannot hear and see how to be still when God seems silent.
The silence of God can feel like abandonment, but in truth, it is often a sacred invitation. Abraham waited 25 years for the promise of Isaac. Joseph endured silence in a pit, in slavery, and in prison. Even Jesus, the Son of God, cried out on the cross: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). Silence doesn’t mean God has forgotten you. It means He is forming something eternal in you.
When we can’t trace His hand, we must trust His heart. Like a teacher who is silent during a test, God is still present, watching, guiding, cheering us on, even when we cannot hear Him. In those quiet seasons, He is refining your faith, stretching your endurance, and cultivating your character.
To put it in a clearer perspective, see a few examples of people who experienced God’s silence:
- Abraham waited 25 years for Isaac
- Joseph suffered through years in a pit, slavery, and prison
- David cried, “How long, Lord?” in the Psalms
- Even Jesus experienced silence at the cross (Matthew 27:46)
This is to let you know that whenever you are seeking God’s face and you seem not to be getting a response, you are not alone, and God is not silent. Just like Abraham was answered, God is definitely going to respond to your prayers in His time.
Sometimes, these moments may seem like punishments, or even neglect, but there weren’t punishments – they were preparation periods. Like a seed buried in darkness before sprouting, these silent seasons produced extraordinary growth.
Why God Allows Silent Seasons
- To Deepen Our Faith: “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we don’t see” (Hebrews 11:1). Silence teaches us to trust beyond feelings.
- To Refine Our Character: Like gold purified in fire, silence burns away superficial faith (1 Peter 1:7).
- To Prepare Us for Greater Things: Joseph’s prison time equipped him to save nations. Your silent season has a purpose.
Practical Ways to Respond When God Seems Silent:
- Keep Showing Up – Maintain prayer and Bible study even when it feels dry
- Recall Past Faithfulness – Journal how God has worked before
- Serve Others – Ministry keeps our focus outward
- Wait Expectantly – “The Lord is good to those who wait for him” (Lamentations 3:25)
Finally, the same God who spoke light into darkness is still speaking. Your season of silence is temporary – dawn is coming. As you wait, remember: what feels like absence is actually the sound of God crafting something eternal in you.

Today’s Scriptural Arsenal (SA) for Daily Living will end here, but note that the Scriptural Arsenal (SA) will only do something once you put it to use. Remember that ONLY the Doers are glorified, but how can you be if you have not studied?
