I have always been told that Greek mythology represented Atlas as holding the world on his shoulders. But apparently, ancient Greek astronomers pictured the sky as a solid heavenly sphere surrounding the earth with stars fixed upon it. So, to start with Atlas was holding the sky away from the earth. It was only later that Atlas became represented as a figure carrying the globe of planet Earth.
Probably many people have felt as though they were carrying the world on their shoulders, but these days, pessimists may be able to feel they are carrying the burden of the heavens as well. In strong men competitions, weightlifters sometimes pick up huge concrete balls which are known as Atlas Stones. Some of these weigh 440 lbs. Champions lift weights approaching the weight of a small car, or of a couple of grand pianos.
Have you reached an age at which things begin to feel heavier to pick up than they used to? Be careful not to carry any burden but those the Lord gives you. His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
Margaret and I were meditating on Psalm 29:11
“The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.”
and we felt the Lord was saying:-
Here is true leadership and maturity, to be full of strength and peace. Strength will not yield to threats or blandishments, and peace will sustain you in serenity where others are troubled and distressed. So, turn to Me again and again and find in Me your solace and your supply. This is My nature to give and to bless. I am patient and long suffering full of mercy and awesome in grace and goodness.
Come to Me and let Me cradle you in My arms, find rest in My unfailing love.
Know that like flowing streams, My strength and peace will refresh your spirit as you wait upon Me. Believe what in fact you do believe, enjoy what in fact you know. Resist the father of lies who would destroy your peace and rob you of strength. See, with My strong hand. I will strengthen you so that you will be able to stand whatever the circumstance.
And so shall it be! You will be able to stand even when the strongest wind is blowing. For I will keep you standing and you will breathe My peace wherever you are.
So do not fear for I am always with you, and I am able to calm situations down. I would endue you with My great peace so that in every circumstance you will be able to stand.
