The Sovereign God: He is Lord Over Climate Change
A significant amount of time and resources have been spent researching the cause of change in nature with a focus on finding solutions to climate change issues in our world today. On a BBC series, Chris Packham tells the astonishing four-and-half billion-year story of the planet. Latest science has been used to create exposure to the world on what our planet is made of, the beauty of our planet, and the changes that have taken place over billions of years.
However, these changes, predominantly degenerative, have been attributed to man, and it has also been scientifically proven to a large extent that man also has control over these changes. Hence, many institutions and governmental bodies have devised means and strategies to checkmate and create a control system to limit these adverse changes. A significant amount of financial involvement has been put aside on climate change projects, and campaigns have been ongoing pro-control of the changes in our planet.
Amid all these, it is expedient for us to look beyond nature, the human-fabricated control and examine what existed five billion years ago and even before the planet’s creation. Nothing by itself created itself! The existence of the invincible God should be brought to the fore here, and then we can appreciate that the only valid control system that can be used in this instance is the hand of the original Creator of the planet. Genesis 1:1-5 stated that;
In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth. 2 The Earth was without form and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
Even from day one of creation, change has started, and since then, it has continued. So God knew what He created, and He factored changes in the climate even from day one but retained the changes and the control system in His own hands. He has all the capacity and power to create and change the climate and weather whenever He desires. One man did tamper with the climate system once in the scripture, and it was recorded that before and after then, no man has done that; Joshua called on God, the Creator of all planets and climates, to allow the sun for more than 24 hours so that he could finish fighting with Amorites; Joshua 10:12-13;
12 Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel:
“Sun, stand still over Gibeon; And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.”
13 So the sun stood still, And the moon stopped,
Till the people had revenge Upon their enemies, is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.
The Psalmist also confirmed that the Almighty and sovereign God has all the control over His creation, and man must adhere to this truth. Our faith in God through Jesus has brought us, as believers, into a dimension of access which has given us control over our world. If Joshua did it, that implies that our faith will determine the level of control that we have over our world. David wrote in Psalms 147:15-18;
He sends out His command to the earth;
His word runs very swiftly.
He gives snow like wool;
He scatters the frost like ashes;
He casts out His hail like morsels;
Who can stand before His cold?
He sends out His word and melts them;
He causes His wind to blow, and the waters flow.
Regardless of how fast our planet is unpleasantly transitioning into a future that is uncertain, God is sovereign over all creation and has the only valid and lasting control over heaven and the earth and on whatever changes are currently taking place. The believer can then step into this revelation and begin to operate with faith, taking control over their situation. This same control system also applies to all other aspects of life: health, spiritual walk with God, finances, mental health, etc.
The sovereign God responds to the believer’s faith, and the believer does not need to have the mountain-size faith; “So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you” (Matthew 17:20).
