The Silence of God: Listening to the Stillness
There are moments in our walk with God when the heavens seem to fall quiet. The prayers we liftโfervent, tear-stained, desperateโecho back to us โunanswered.โ The voice that once thundered through parted seas or whispered peace in the storm feels distant, as if God has turned His face away.
In these seasons, we stand in the stillness, straining to hear, wondering if weโve been forgotten. Yet, what if the silence itself is a sacred invitation? What if, in the hush, God is calling us deeper into His love, His goodness, His grace?
Remember Abraham, standing on the edge of a promise that seemed impossible. God had spoken, declaring a son would come, yet years slipped by with only the rustle of desert sand to greet him. Genesis 16 tells us he faltered, taking matters into his own hands with Hagar, but Godโs silence wasnโt absenceโit was preparation. In Genesis 21:1-2 (NLT), we read, โThe Lord kept his word and did for Sarah exactly what he had promisedโฆโ The silence was a crucible, shaping Abrahamโs obedience, teaching him to trust the One whose timing defies our own.
Or consider Job, a man who knew Godโs voice until calamity stripped him bare. In his anguish, he cried out, and God remained silentโuntil the whirlwind broke through. Job 38:1 (NLT) says, โThen the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind.โ What came before the answer? A stillness that tested Jobโs faith, refined his soul, and revealed Godโs grandeur.
God’s Word assures us that Godโs love never wavers, even when His voice fades. Psalm 46:10 (NLT) beckons, โBe still, and know that I am God!โ That stillness isnโt emptinessโitโs a sanctuary. Itโs where we learn that His goodness doesnโt depend on our hearing Him but on His unchanging nature. His grace wraps us even when we feel alone, whispering through the quiet that we are seen, known, and held.
Sometimes, Godโs silence is His nearness, a call to lean harder into faith.
So how do we listen to the stillness? First, we trust. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT) reminds us, โTrust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.โ Trust isnโt demanding answers; itโs resting in the One who holds them. When God seems silent, Heโs not testing our patienceโHeโs cultivating our dependence, drawing us into a relationship where His heart becomes our home.
Second, we obey. Silence doesnโt excuse us from following. Jesus, in the garden of Gethsemane, faced a deafening quiet as He prayed for the cup to pass. Yet Matthew 26:39 (NLT) records His surrender: โMy Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.โ His obedience in the silence led to our redemption. Our stillness, too, can birth something holy when we yield to His will.
Finally, we wait. Isaiah 40:31 (NLT) sings, โBut those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.โ Waiting isnโt passiveโitโs an active clinging to Godโs promises, a refusal to let go of His goodness even when the air feels thin.
The silence of God is not a void;ย itโs where we discover that His love doesnโt shout to prove itselfโit rests, steady and sure, beneath our doubts. His grace works in the quiet, shaping us into vessels of His glory.ย
So, dearly beloved, if youโre standing in the stillness today, donโt despair. Lift your eyes to the stars, press your ear to the silence, and listen.
He is there, weaving a story of trust and triumph, inviting you deeper into the mystery of His heart.
